Hi,

I have very recently opened a little shop which stocks handcrafted home accessories, fashion accessories and gift stuff....it's cute, reasonably priced and most people who enter land up buying something.

But my location is terrible...it's within a daily needs market and at the absolute far end....i've tried the usual nhewsaper pamphlet thing ...it doesnt work.... any ideas on low cost innovative marketing????

Hi Dipika,

It seems to me if you are situated within a daily needs market, you have a ready-made stream of customers, provided they know you are there. Perhaps something outrageous, like having someone (you, a friend, or an employee) dress up in a wild costume, with balloons and maybe even give away some kind of small treat like cookies, just to draw attention to the fact that you are there. I bet some who come to see what the commotion is all about will buy and a weekend promotion might be powerful enough for regular customers of the market to realize that your store is there and encourage them to make a mental note for when they need a gift, they won't have to make an extra stop.

Hope this helps,

I agree with what Cathy said. You need to somehow grab people's attention. Often offering a free gift for browsing or free gift with purchase gets people's attention, but bold, flashy attention getters outside, leading people in is a must if you feel too hidden-away in the background.

Sounds to me like you need some publicity, preferably free. Your shop sounds interesting. Editors are always looking for stories. Perhaps you could pitch it to him as human interest. If you sell products made by a host of local people you could pitch a story about helping the local economy by providing a v enue for local artists to showcase there talents. With the holidays approaching so quickly people will be glad for someone to show them a place to purchase quality handcrafted products.
P.S. Don't forget the power of blogs etc. A few pictures and some good copy would go a long way.

Well you've gotten some good suggestions and I agree with them. I would ad that perhaps you could have coupons made up and ask your good non-competing neighbors to pass them out with their customers order. YOu could offer to a free something and give the merchant a 10% discount for their help if they can bring you 10 new people a day! Code the coupon so you know who sent them to you!

Best of luck!

I love the idea about having a friend dress up and balloons. I know here in Florida in Pasco county there are always new places coming and going. I usually do not even notice them until they have been there for a while, then am suprised to find out how long they have been there.

I DO notice the ones that do something wild and stand out from the crowd and it makes me want to pull over and see what its all about.

This is not really wild but I remember this so well, a local convenience store that I never really went to used the front part of their parking lot to host a yard sale for some community members. People set up tables and had their sale. It brought in a lot of business for them, and I found myself going by there more often after that and I cant even tell you why, never really thought about it, it just happened.

Anything that can make you stand out in a good way!!! thats the ticket.

Dipika,

What do you mean by, "I've tried the unusual newspaper pamphlet thing..." ? Have you called your local newspaper to say that you've just opened a new shop? If you haven't, they can send a reporter over to your shop, and they can run a feature article about you--with photos and all! (I hope you haven't already tried that.) I think it would get you business, coupled with what others have suggested in this thread.

Just a thought.

Warm regards,
Sherrill
